What is an orthopedic boot?
The orthopedic boot is an orthosis that stabilizes and maintains an injury, a fracture in the foot, ankle or tibia, and is generally used as an alternative to a cast. Orthopedic boots can also be used after surgery to protect the weakened area. Unlike a cast, an orthopedic boot is not disabling, as it allows you to put your foot down and walk without pain.
Why an orthopedic boot rather than a cast?
If medicine in general recommends a cast, why would it be less dangerous and better to wear an orthopedic boot? The orthopedic boot, offers you all the benefits of a cast, minus the drawbacks. With an orthopedic boot you’ll :
- Perfect, tight-fitting immobility : under the cast, if it’s badly placed, your fracture could move and lead to severe pain and a longer convalescence, the orthopedic boot, on the other hand, perfectly immobilizes the area. You can also choose the degree of immobility you want, thanks to the orthopedic boot’s fastening devices and inflatable flaps.
- Less risk of complication : with a cast, you run the risk of allergic skin reactions or bedsores, and you can also develop edema or clots. With an orthopedic boot, there’s no need to worry about these complications, because the pressure provided by the sides of the boot allows better circulation of flows in your body, so you won’t get any edema or clots. The materials chosen are hypoallergenic, and as the boot is breathable and removable, you won’t risk anything.
- More mobility : the aim of the orthopedic boot is that you can continue to walk almost normally without pain. Lightweight and easy to put on, they’re equipped with a non-slip sole on the outside and a shock-absorbing sole on the inside to absorb shocks so they don’t reverberate through your injury. So you gain autonomy by choosing an orthopedic boot rather than a cast.
- Better recovery : with an orthopedic boot, your convalescence takes place under better conditions because you don’t have the handicap of a cast, and what’s more, your return to so-called normal life will be quicker. Your return to walking without a boot or cast will be easier, because you’ll have continued to work the muscles, joints and ligaments that weren’t injured. Healing is also better because, by choosing the orthopedic boot, you will have offered stability in addition to immobility to your injury.
- Better hygiene : the orthopedic boot can be removed easily to wash and bathe the area, which can’t be done with a cast.
